The narrative on gender-based violence has transitioned from a focus on the private to the public sphere, with a recognition of its long-term impacts on individuals, communities, businesses, and states. Movements like #MeToo have helped bring attention to the varied experiences of violence that women and other vulnerable populations face in public spaces such as workplaces, public transportation, and the digital realm.

This panel features thought leaders who will explore how action-research and advocacy can contribute to creating safer spaces. Panelist will draw on their innovative groundwork across developing countries to illustrate how structural barriers — in the form of deeply entrenched gender inequalities and restrictive social norms — condition and heighten women’s vulnerability to violence in physical and digital spaces. Part of IDRC’s Solutions for Gender Equality speaker series, the discussion will uncover promising tools, approaches, and policies used to challenge and dismantle these barriers to gender equality.

Our expert panel features:

Joana Varon, founding director and policy strategist at Coding Rights, Brazil.
Rakhi Sehgal, labour researcher and activist, India
Ammar Malik, associate director of Research at Evidence for Policy Design, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, United States
Margaret Biggs, Chairperson of the IDRC Board of Governors, will moderate the panel.

The Solutions for Gender Equality speaker series is inspired by Women Deliver 2019 — the world’s largest conference on gender equality — which will take place in Vancouver from June 3 to 6, 2019. The speaker series focuses on the conference theme of power and how it can drive or hinder progress and change.

French and English simultaneous interpretation will be available.
