A Future Fit for Girls and Women: Why the SDGs matter for Gender

June 5 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Free

About the session:

Although Canada was one of 193 nations that signed on to the SDGs in 2015, it has been slow to develop a strategy for implementing the goals nationally. Communities across the country have a pivotal role in translating the SDG measurement framework (17 goals and 169 indicators) for the Canadian context. Policy Alternatives’ recent publication The Best and Worst Places to be a Woman in Canada 2019provides a powerful snapshot of the work that must be done to improve the lives of girls and women in communities like Kelowna and Abbotsford-Mission. A deeper undercurrent in this conversation is the endemic violence against women in every community across Canada, the impact of resource development and “man-camps”, and the ongoing issue of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women.

At the same time, Canada has an important role to play globally as a steward of immense natural resources and through its role as an international broker, rule maker and champion of women’s rights and opportunities.

A future fit for girls and women is an intersectional future which makes inclusion its core principle. It considers what floors must exist for marginalized people to access the systems and institutions that scale and distribute core services. It considers barriers to access and the conditions that enable the most underserved and marginalized to thrive. But most importantly, it will tackle how we can champion marginalized people as architects of a brighter future.

This panel session will include a discussion of the SDGs shortcomings and how Canada can lead by translating the indicators in meaningful ways followed by a Q&A.
